The Republic of San Marino is among the tiniest in the world. Located less than 20 km far from the Adriatic Sea between the Italian regions of Emilia-Romagna and Marche, it covers an area of 61 square km. Its impressive three-peaked Mount Titano (750 m above sea level) makes the landscape absolutely unique.


The resident population counts slightly more than 30,000 inhabitants. Despite its small size, San Marino boasts a well-developed and diversified economy. Manufacturing and services are the driving sectors but the banking and financial system has been growing strongly over the last few years.


Founded in 301 A.D., free and independent ever since, San Marino is the oldest republic in the world, ruled and represented by two Captains Regent – joint Heads of State – elected every six months from among the members of the Great and General Council, that is the unicameral Parliament. The executive power is jointly exercised by the members of the Congress of State.


Trading relations are maintained with all countries of the world, though European countries represent the main markets. San Marino is not a EU Member State, this nonetheless it adopted the euro as its legal tender by virtue of its previous monetary union with Italy.
